Glenn Turner Acupuncture Lindfield

Acupuncture has a long history of treating all kinds of medical conditions dating back over 2000 years.

While today in the west acupuncture may not be everyone’s first choice treatment option, that is starting to change as more people come to acupuncture when nothing else seems to help and leave happy with the results of their treatments.

One of the first questions people ask me is “Is acupuncture any good for (fill in the blank)”?

My response is that I believe acupuncture can help with any condition but may not necessarily be enough on its own to treat some conditions.

All bodies can benefit with increased circulation of oxygen rich blood to a problem area.

With pain in particular a big part of acupunctures success is that fresh blood is supplied to a damaged or inflamed area while localised waste products can be flushed away. In addition natural pain killers and anti inflammatory factors are sent to the area of pain as a result of needling and defensive, painful muscle spasm, can be released quickly and relatively painlessly.
In my practice I treat all conditions that can be treated with acupuncture and there really aren’t many that can’t at least be helped by the process.

Acupuncture for Pain

A major part of my practice is treating pain. Musculoskeletal pain such as knee and shoulder pain as well as the acupuncturists “bread and butter” pains; back and neck pain, are a big part of my practice and are probably the most common reasons why people come and see me.

However pain can have many causes and doesn’t necessarily need to be musculoskeletal in origin for acupuncture to help. Many of my clients come for help with pain of a non- structural nature such as abdominal pain, period pain & head pain (headaches & migraine).

In most cases acupuncture can bring quick relief and over a period of time and a number of treatment sessions help resolve the pain problem completely.

Acupuncture as a Diagnostic Tool

The fact that acupuncture can work pretty quickly in most cases of pain can also be useful when it doesn’t work. This usually indicates that there is some major structural cause that needs to be treated.

For example a case of severe neck pain that ordinarily would respond fairly quickly to acupuncture was shown to be caused by a major cervical disc issue that required surgery to eliminate the pain.

My usual procedure is to suggest a course of 3-4 treatments after which we evaluate if acupuncture has delivered the expected result (from my perspective) and the desired result that the client was looking for.

Sometimes it’s simply a case of a few more treatments or a change in tact with the treatment. Other times there is something going on that is preventing acupuncture from working. At this point looking more closely at the cause of the problem (scans, x-rays etc) is usually called for.

Not Just About Pain

While my practice is primarily about relieving pain as quickly as possible (ideally immediately during the session) and eliminating the cause of the pain (usually over a course of treatments) some other health issues that people come to see more for and that I have treated successfully include: Digestive issues such as IBS and abdominal bloating & Gynacological issues such as infertility and period pain and irregularity.

My "Style” of Acupuncture

My original training in acupuncture was TCM style (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Over the years I have studied a number of complementary and alternative acupuncture systems allowing me to expanded my practice to include:

Musculoskeletal Acupuncture: Trigger Point Needling /Dry Needling
Dr Tan’s: Balance Method
Master Tung’s Distal Acupuncture

To a lesser degree, but still a significant part of my acupuncture practice are Scalp & Auricular (ear) acupuncture.

My goal is always to create a personalised treatment that gives the best chance of the best result for my clients. When the practitioner has a variety of tools to draw on, and combine, to create treatments that cater to each clients very specific needs, it allows the client to experience acupuncture in its most powerfully effective form.
