EFT & Tapping: Emotional Freedom & Relief From Stress
Over the last 20 years EFT (Emotional Freedom Technqiues) and
tapping techniques have become very popular tools with individuals looking for powerful and easy to use self help
techniques as well as with therapists looking to expand their range & provide clients with relief from a wide
range of mental and emotional issues.
Originally created as a phobia cure and having developed its reputation by
helping war veterans not only manage but in many cases resolve their PTSD problems, EFT and tapping are now being
used for a wide variety of emotional problems such as stress, worry & anxiety and phobias just to name a
few.
Additionally EFT can be used for physical pain. Because it is based on acupuncture,
and acupuncture points are stimulated during tapping, physical as well as emotional issues can be
addressed.
But working with problems and pain is only half of the EFT / Tapping story.
Tapping can be used to enhance performance in any area of our lives not just in the
areas we are having problems in. Tapping is now routinely being used by athletes, for example, to remove post
event stress and to help remove limiting beliefs and expectations about their ability to
perform.
How Does it
work?
Tapping works primarily by reducing stress within
our nervous systems by removing inappropriate fight flight responses that occur. The fight flight response is
obviously an essential survival mechanism but when that mechanism is activated in relation to an imagined rather
than real threat we experience stress of varying degrees. Not only is this stress response unessential at that
point in time but it will also impede our ability to think and act in a way that will help us resolve whatever is
causing the stress.
To eliminate this stress we focus on what we are feeling and where we are feeling it.
Stress can manifest as muscle aches and pains such as a stiff neck & lower back pain or general uncomfortable
feelings throughout the body such as butterflies in the stomach or a constricted and tight chest.
The trick to effective use of EFT is to focus on what we are feeling and where we are
feeling it as we tap our way through a sequence of acupuncture points on the face and chest. As we focus on what we
are feeling and tapping on the points we breathe deeply with the intention of relaxing. We don’t force ourselves to
relax we simply observe where we are feeling the tension and continue to tap and breathe until it gets
released.
A round of EFT takes less than a minute with the quick and easy to learn short cut
methods that are commonly used today.
A Powerful Self Help
Tool
While EFT can certainly help in dealing with major
emotional & physical issues in my opinion the real power of EFT is in how it enables us to manage our stress on
a moment to moment basis as it occurs throughout the day.
While EFT is great for dealing with the “big things” in our lives the little things are often ignored or not even
noticed because they are happening all the time. If we allow the effect of these little things to accumulate our
lives begin to suffer as we are now forced to operate with a constant higher level of stress.
When we know EFT and know how to tap we can eliminate every one of these minor stressors as they occur so they
don’t accumulate and keep us stuck operating at a sub par level.
A comment I often hear is that “EFT has given me my life back”. It’s really not that they lost their lives but
rather they lost access to the best of themselves , so that their life became stressful, boring, frustrating and in
some cases depressing with no solution in sight.
If we consistently apply tapping to release major and minor stress throughout the day
as it occurs pretty soon we will start to feel like nothing is too big for us. The smaller stresses pretty much
vanish and the bigger issues of our lives become a lot less bothersome and
worrying.
